The International Alliance of Composers
IAC Mission StatementIAC Mission Statement

The International Alliance of Composers is a guild of professional and aspiring composers worldwide. Our goal is to provide services, create standards and bring positive change for composers everywhere, helping to provide more secure, meaningful and prosperous lives for our members.

We will work on local, national and international issues affecting composers' livelihood by creating, funding and maintaining advocacy campaigns supporting the rights of composers in these issues.

We will suggest to our members, IAC endorsed wages and working conditions in order to maintain minimum standards for our members involved in recording, TV shows, music videos, commercials, films, video games and traveling theatrical productions.

We will provide services and value to our members lives personally and professionally with products and services free of charge or significantly discounted to IAC members.

We will organize the unorganized composers, giving them the benefits of unity while securing control over our industry sectors and labor markets.

We will build political power to ensure that composers' voices are heard at every level of government to create economic opportunity and foster social justice

We will develop highly trained and motivated leaders at every level of the IAC who reflect the membership in all its diversity.

We will build coalitions and act in solidarity with other organizations who share our concern for social and economic justice.

Upcoming IAC ProgramsUpcoming IAC Programs

We are a new organization, but our sights are set on the future of our world and making it truly a better place to live. Some of the programs that we expect to create in the next year or two include:

  • IAC Composer Accreditation Program - It's often difficult to stand out from the crowd in this world of thousands and thousands of composers. IAC is addressing this one way by creating the IAC Composer Accreditation Program. This is a quantitative and not qualitative title that is based on the number of verifiable credits you have in your specialty. We will not be judging the quality of music just how many professional credits. And with this title that members can legally append to their name will let them proudly show they are a serious professional composer. This is planned to be a difficult title to achieve so as to give it value and weight to the industry.
  • IAC Community Outreach: Workshops and education for filmmakers, film industry, and educators - One of the biggest issues we are confronted with is that so many people, especially young people, have no idea of how to work with a composer properly in their film and works. Often confused by the sonic goodness of poor music created by software power users and not by composers, there is a decided lack of direction or empathy with film makers in how they perceive and treat composers. IAC will create education workshops, seminars, and publications to address these issues.
  • IAC Composer Clinics and Online Training - There is just so much to know out there to be a successful composer today: music business, music law, music theory and considerations, music technology, and so much more. IAC will present regular clinics and workshops online and live to promote the ongoing growth of our members at all levels of their careers.
  • IAC Anonymous Pay surveys and PRO Stub analysis - So many facts on comparison of composers' pay are not available to us from our PROs today. IAC has a long term plan to collect the essential data from our members in a secure and anonymous manner to allow us the ability to research and create reports on real wage and earnings compared side by side member to member.
  • IAC Member Directory - We plan to create an easily searchable feature-rich directory of our members along with technology and business ideas to promote our members.

We also have long term goals to provide for composers on a much deeper and more intimate level. Here are some potential goals for the IAC on a longer term, two to ten year period:

  • IAC Scoring Workshops - Workshops with master scoring composers to promote mentoring to less experienced members.
  • Peer Music Review System - members can listen to other members' music and rate it, critique it. The more critiques done, the more it will queue their music to be critiqued.
  • IAC Funded Events - Concerts and performances of IAC member works.
  • IAC Awards and Distinction - Annual IAC awards for various categories.
  • IAC Member Celebrations - Lunches and dinners for members premieres and such.
  • IAC Member Personal Websites and tools - like Ning.com community or Facebook sites with audio, video, blog, etc but open to the general public
  • IAC Financial Assistance - full gamut of financial services including Credit Union, 401k, Health Insurance, Pension Fund, Emergency Fund
  • IAC Legal Services - legal consultation, contract preparation and negotiation, legal directives against orgs and for composers, etc.
  • IAC PAC and Lobbying Services - Staff lobbyist, org to support the PAC, taking advocacy issues to DC and states' congress.
  • Collective bargaining - creating situations for negotiation with all parties from ASCAP to RIAA and everything in between
  • Strategic alliances - working with other worthy orgs to continue the message.
  • IAC Leadership programs - leadership training, panels, debates, lectures by IAC staff/board.
